Tanzanite - Stone of the Month
Tanzanite is a beautiful blue-violet crystal and is one of the birthstones for the month of December. The blue color appears stronger under fluorescent light and the violet hues are more apparent when under incandescent lighting. The mineral was first discovered in the Mererani Hills of northern Tanzania near Mount Kilimanjaro in 1967 and is extremely rare to find outside this region. Citrine is the birthstone for the month of November. The name derives from the Latin citrina meaning "yellow" and is also the origin of the word "citron". The stone can range in color from a pale yellow to brown. A member of the Quartz family, citrine is closely related to amethyst, sometimes the two are even found together in the same crystal, called ametrine. Citrine, as well as other stones within the Quartz family, has a 7 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness.
